This is a beautifully preserved pair of Acoustic Research 3-way floor-standing speakers, model TSW 510. They have 10″ woofer, 6-1/2″ midrange, and a 3/4 titanium dome tweeter, rated to handle 150 watts RMS each and cover within + or – 3dB the wide response of 44 Hz – 40 KHz. The top and bottom panels are solid American walnut, while the cabinet itself is finished in black vinyl laminate. The surrounds of the woofer and the midrange drivers have just been replaced, and the hardwood has received preserving oil treatment. They are a 1987-89 model, they are performing with original quality and have like-new appearance. These speakers have a very clear sound that seems much more like listening to live music than listening to a speaker system. I have done some research into natural sounding speakers, and it is perhaps owing to the range that the 6-1/2 midrange covers from its crossover points of 700 Hz to 5 KHz, keeping crossover points out of the critical human hearing range, that is partially responsible for this clarity. The thick felt surrounding the midrange and tweeter prevent diffraction from the baffle, preserving the imaging integrity. The high frequencies sound detailed, open, and airy; while the lows go deep without ever sounding boomy. The rear panel connection terminals are sturdy binding posts that accept bare or tinned wire, pins, spade lugs, and single or dual banana plugs. If you look at photos of any other pair of the same model, you may notice the larger dustcaps on these. The woofers originally used an synthetic dustcap that became brittle with age and developed hairline cracks, so I replaced them, using larger ones of conventional fiber based dust cap material that hide the original glue lines and voice coil “pigtail” connections. This repair not only makes the speakers look better, but it also ensures that no dust or other particles contaminate and damage the voice coils. The cabinets’ black vinyl laminate has loosened in a few inconspicuous edge spots that are not likely visible in normal distance viewing, so I have included a couple of closeups of the most visible of these. None is any larger or more visible than the one I show at the base of the front baffle that is hidden behind the grill cloth. The finish of the walnut tops and bases are nearly flawless. The grill cloths have no tears, holes, or worn spots, proof of the exceptionally careful keeping. These speakers are rated as a 4 ohm speaker, so they can draw more power from your amplifier than at its 8 ohm rated output.
