This listing is for a lot a beautiful pair of, Acoustic Research, AR 3 Speakers. Condition: Pre-Owned, single owner. Great set of some of the best speakers ever made! Grills have not ever been removed. There is some damage on them, both on the cloth and at the bottom frame of one speaker. Serial numbers are 50672 and 50739 Doing some research, I believe these puts them right at the height of production, probably around 1967-69. They were obtained from original owner. Previous owner said these were used both horizontally and vertically. There are some scratches, mostly on one end of each cabinet, and some old residue from old lammers he once had on one side but, a good cleaning and oiling should shine them right up. I’d probably rate them about a 7 out of 10 but please use all pics to determine condition. There is one small grille hole, smaller than a dime, on 739, 672 has a small chunk gouge on top that is also smaller than a dime and the original “3” hanger has been bent. Both speakers have a little separation at the bottom of grille and cabinet but no damage to cabinet. Grilles show more age than the chestnut cabinets. Pics provided show all of these slight flaws. Not sure if someone attempted to take off the grille at one point but it is all in tact and original. I assume these need some foaming work and they likely need potentiometer work or replacement Sep 29 updateI actually just re-tested these and the potentiometers may only require a cleaning. The amount of resistance each way seems perfect. Speakers still sound great but, I really still don’t know what to compare them to Just as most of these now 50yr old beauties. Speakers all fired when tested. I even tested each, individual driver, with a 9v battery connected to a + and – and each individual responded. Again, there may need to be some work but I had no problem getting them going and getting good, crisp sound. The terminals, jumpers, and pot knobs are original and in good shape. These appeared to be in very good to excellent overall condition when tested. The wood work is easy to clean up to about a 9 out of 10 as the small gauge, I believe is the only wood imperfection that can not be easily buffed or oiled, and the sound is clear.
