It was discovered that one of the mid-range speakers was shot, but they just happened to have an original one on the shelf, I couldn’t believe it. Also, one of the “3’s” was missing, and they had that too, amazing! I was told that these AR’s are in the best condition in terms of exterior condition that they have ever seen, and they now function acoustically superbly as well. The grill cloth is excellent considering the age, and the walnut literally does not have a scratch (well maybe one, but I didn’t see it) on it, and although the pictures may suggest otherwise, they have not been refinished. Some of the original paperwork is included with these iconic survivors! Both mid-range speakers are ferrite speakers not alnico, and the one that was replaced was the same as the one which wasn’t so either they were both replaced at some time long ago (which seems unlikely) or perhaps these AR 3’s were produced late in the production run and Acoustic Research used parts which were being used in the AR 3A model, we don’t know. The woofers are original Alnico in in each and the tweeters are original. I have uploaded a picture of the speaker with the replaced mid-range, and I refuse to take the other grill off because it is so delicate, and the grill cloth is just about perfect.. One slip and that would not be the case. I’ve decided to re-list them for a fairly limited time and then just hang on to them if they don’t sell because I just love them.
