I had the Woofers Reconed five years ago by an incredible Speaker repair guy and had some custom covers made for the front. The originals were foam and they just deteriorated. These speakers are in excellent condition. The tweeter dust caps do have dimples but that does not affect performance at all. The sound quality of these speakers is amazing! I’m approximately 4 1/2 hours from LA and 1.5 hours from Las Vegas and I go to both places often.

Bedford Vintage H-Fi is primarily known for its offerings of “Silver Era” components and systems – I rarely offer the components with a black hi-tech look- that came to dominate the market from the mid-1980’s onwards. It is not just a matter of cosmetics – build quality, circuit design, aesthetic principles and characteristics sonics all underwent a very marked change and few of the newer components appeal to us. But in some cases manufacturers simply changed the finish from silver to black, retaining the build quality and clean minimalist designs that they introduced in the 1970’s. It is hard to find better small amplifiers, past or present. In the 1980’s Kenwood began to use manufacturing outside of Japan for some models, black cosmetics became the norm and shortly thereafter the minimalist aesthetic was replaced with a more cluttered, feature-laden design. The amplifiers were certainly more powerful and generally quieter with improved transient response. But the overall sound lacked the appealing warmth of their 1970’s models and build quality was definitely lower. The KA-32/ KA-32B were 35 wpc entry level amplifiers from 1984 and they mark a transition point between the older and newer models. They offered good value and basic features in a low profile enclosure 16.5″ x 3.5″ x 10.5 with minimalist controls. The lighted switches are definitely late 1980’s bling but thankfully they are not too distracting. You do get phono, tuner and aux inputs plus tape and tape monitoring, 3 AC outlets (1 unswitched) and twist- lock connectors for 2 pairs of speakers. Reviews generally don’t have any high praise for this amplifier, but it is a Kenwood that was still made in Japan so it deserves a bit of respect for reasonable power. Good performance and very good value. With good specifications for low distortion, low noise and wide frequency response, this amplifier is a good match for many entry level small speakers. The AR-208V was a very compact two-way acoustic suspension design with a 5.25″ long-throw woofer and a 3/4″ dome tweeter in a 10.7″ x 7.25″ x 5.75 enclosure. It was a smaller take on of my favorite small speakers – the now hard-to-find AR-8B from the mid-1980’s. Back in the day that speaker was described as a very attractive choice for budget priced systems where space is limited… A remarkably good sound reproducer… Filled the room with a sound that totally belied their size and price. Much the same could be said about the AR-208V which offers an upgraded tweeter. AR brochures sum up its performance as: full-range sound from an incredibly small package. In the 1960’s Acoustic Research and KLH were dominant brands in the US hi-fi market. Acoustic Resaearch’s AR-4x remained a popular budget speaker into the 1970’s. The “original” AR designs were replaced in 1966/1967 by a new lie with tthe Teledyne/AR branding. It was fashionable at the time to look down upon these new models. Their cheap enclosures were definitely a step downmarket but these post-classic AR models deserved more respect. The acoustic suspension models introduced in the early 1980’s were very good inexpensive speakers boasting an acceptable and controlled low end, wonderful midrange detail, a more extended and pleasing top end and very good overall balance. Over the past 15 years they have regained a better reputation as remarkably good. Among those contributing their talents in those years was Ken Kantor, a brilliant M. Graduate who had worked for AR before founding his own highly regarded speaker company, NHT, in 1986. Reviewers loved the new AR models, particularly the 302 and 303 which had heavy input from Kantor. But commercial success was limited and in 1996 another ownership change took place and AR would never again regain its glory. Thankfully after 1989 there were a few AR small speakers of good quality that were worthy successors to the AR-18, AR-18B and AR-8B. AR in the UK collaborated with the US on the Spirit line of speakers(112, 122, 132) just as the Jensen takeover was in the works. And in the mid-1990s the AR-208, 218 and 228 were also fine compact speakers. The AR-208V in this listing perform very nicely. They have a bit of cosmetic wear and tear on the cabinet edges. The system as a whole offers surprising full sound from such small components.
