Edgar Villchur didn’t set out to start a speaker company; he just wanted to license his acoustic suspension designs to other speaker companies. In the early’50s, he shopped the concept to the biggest names in the business, but not a single one was interested. So Villchur started Acoustic Research in 1952, and his very first speaker, the AR-1, was an immediate hit. Villchur’s design strategy used the elasticity of air within a sealed cabinet to provide the restoring force for the driver, which allowed his relatively small speakers to produce deep, low-distortion bass. Villchur’s AR-3 was an even greater departure. The look was pure and clean, just a plain, wood-veneered box, but lurking behind the knit-cloth grille was the world’s first production dome tweeter and dome midrange drivers, and a 12-inch cone woofer. By today’s standards, the AR-3 wasn’t all that small-it came in at 25 inches tall, 14 inches wide, and 11.5 inches deep, and weighed 47 pounds. What made the AR-3 a sensation was the sound. In the early’60s, Villchur conducted a series of live-versus-recorded demonstrations in which the sound of a live string quartet was compared with the recorded quartet played through a pair of AR-3s. Most listeners couldn’t tell the difference between the speakers and the musicians, a testament to the AR-3’s quality. Restored AR90 Teledyne Acoustic Research Speakers. For sale are my restored pair of Acoustic Research AR90 speakers. For many these are the Holy Grail, bettered only by the AR9 speakers which are essentially the same thing but with 12″ instead of 10″ woofers. In summary here’s what’s been done. Refoamed all 4-10 woofers. Refoamed the 2-8 lower midranges. I applied Mortite caulking to the mid and woofer to dampen the frames; this reduces any resonance or potential ringing. Added a brace to the inside of the cabinet to minimize front-rear vibration and resonance. Upgraded the tweeter and upper midrange capacitors with modern polyfilm components. Installed larger binding posts to handle larger wire. Oiled and waxed the cabinets. All grills are included and are in excellent condition. The only flaw on these is that one has some marring on the top right / rear corner of the cabinet (see close up picture). Here’s a link to a site that gives the details and specs on the AR90’s. Legendary and needing no introduction , the AR LST (Laboratory Standard Transducer) has been the flagship of Acoustic Research and unparalleled in outstanding sound, from bass that you could feel to the shimmer and airy-ness that only a set with restored/rebuilt original tweeters can produce. They are so vivid, lifelike and room filling. This was the pinnacle of the Golden Age of HiFi. The stands are not included, I need these for my other pair of LSTs. To summarize the restoration process, see below. Restored original tweeters utilizing my proprietary process which has been accredited throughout by top AR enthusiasts within the relevant forums. Elegant and neatly re-foamed woofers, using the proper surround roll. Perfectly aligned voice coils for distortion free bass output to the lowest octave. A full cleaning of the Spectral Balance controls. New top quality film capacitors in the tweeter and midrange crossover networks, and also film caps used in the woofer shunt capacitors. A very expensive but worthwhile upgrade! New BUSS fuses, FNM2. Finely sanded and oiled cabinetry, displaying the complex and rich grain in the original walnut veneer. Being original, they show some minor bumps and indentations in some small areas, but see the pictures of their glorious presentation. They display extremely well and can proudly adorn elegant atmospheres. New grill cloth of the proper 18 count lambswool, installed precisely and taught, with Velcro to be able to remove the grills at will.
