Ar4x Acoustic Research Oiled Walnut Speakers Plywood Back Clean Original. Early pair with the plywood backs. To the best of my knowledge, these have never been opened. Grill cloth covers still have white staples holding them in place. When i initially received this set, the tweeter controls were a bit finicky. After some deoxit treatment they are currently working fairly well once set. Although certainly personal preference, these are easily some of the best sounding speakers I have encountered. The cabinets are not mint, but in very good condition. There is a scratch mark on the top of one of the cabinets. This is more noticable under low angle lighting and I have provided a photo which i believe highlights this defect at its worst appearance. Small veneer chip to the bottom back of the opposite speaker. There are a few other imperfections here and there on the set, but nothing of major significance. Approx measurements: 19″ x 10″ x 9. This is a great pair of classic speakers known to audiophiles as one of the best sounding and well built speakers. They are the popular Acoustic Research AR-3a models with oiled walnut cabinets found at a local estate sale. I plugged them in and one of them sounded great the other I could not get much sound out of. I messed around with the knobs on the back that increase/decrease frequencies and they were very scratchy and did not do anything so obviously these are bad so maybe that is why the speaker did not work properly. The woofers have a piece around the inside as pictured that I do not believe are original to the cone. I would say these need some work but the potential is great. These speakers even have the original tags stapled to the back of each speaker. The serial numbers are ; 20687 and 20688. The speakers have good looking surrounds , the original grills that were glued on and I pried them off to check the insides , original paperwork on the back and consecutive serial numbers.
