Audio Source Separation and Speech Enhancement. By Emmanuel Vincent, Tuomas Virtanen, Sharon Gannot. Learn the technology behind hearing aids, Siri, and Echo Audio source separation and speech enhancement aim to extract one or more source signals of interest from an audio recording involving several sound sources. These technologies are among the most studied in audio signal processing today and bear a critical role in the success of hearing aids, hands-free phones, voice command and other noise-robust audio analysis systems, and music post-production software. Research on this topic has followed three convergent paths, starting with sensor array processing, computational auditory scene analysis, and machine learning based approaches such as independent component analysis, respectively. This book is the first one to provide a comprehensive overview by presenting the common foundations and the differences between these techniques in a unified setting. Key features: Consolidated perspective on audio source separation and speech enhancement. Both historical perspective and latest advances in the field, e. Diverse disciplines: array processing, machine learning, and statistical signal processing. Covers the most important techniques for both single-channel and multichannel processing. This book provides both introductory and advanced material suitable for people with basic knowledge of signal processing and machine learning. Thanks to its comprehensiveness, it will help students select a promising research track, researchers leverage the acquired cross-domain knowledge to design improved techniques, and engineers and developers choose the right technology for their target application scenario. It will also be useful for practitioners from other fields e. Acoustics, multimedia, phonetics, and musicology willing to exploit audio source separation or speech enhancement as pre-processing tools for their own needs. EMMANUEL VINCENT is a Senior Research Scientist with Inria, Nancy, France. His research focuses on machine learning for speech and audio signal processing. He has been working on audio source separation for 15 years and co-authored over 180 publications in this field. His contributions include harmonic nonnegative matrix factorization, full-rank spatial covariance modeling, joint spatial/spectral estimation, deep learning based multichannel source separation, and objective performance metrics. He has given several keynotes, tutorials and summer school lectures, including at Interspeech 2012 and 2016, WASPAA 2015 and LVA/ICA 2015. He is a founding chair of the series of Signal Separation Evaluation Campaigns (SiSEC) and CHiME Speech Separation and Recognition Challenges and the chair of ISCA’s special interest group on Robust Speech Processing. TUOMAS VIRTANEN is a Professor with the Laboratory of Signal Processing, Tampere University of Technology, Finland, where he is leading the Audio Research Group. He is known for his pioneering work on single-channel sound source separation using nonnegative matrix factorization, and its application to noise-robust speech recognition, music content analysis, and sound event detection. His research interests also include content analysis and processing of audio signals in general. He has authored more than 170 publications and received four best paper awards. SHARON GANNOT is a Full Professor at the Faculty of Engineering, Bar-Ilan University, Israel, where he is heading the Speech and Signal Processing laboratory and the Signal Processing Track. His research interests include multi-microphone speech processing; distributed algorithms for noise reduction and speaker separation; array processing on manifold; dereverberation; single-microphone speech enhancement; and speaker localization and tracking. He received the Bar-Ilan University’s Outstanding Lecturer Award for 2010 and 2014 and the Bar-Ilan Rector Innovation in Research Award in 2018. He has co-authored over 200 publications and lectured tutorials at ICASSP 2012, EUSIPCO 2012, ICASSP 2013, and EUSIPCO 2013 and a keynote address at IWAENC 2012. He was a co-editor of the book Speech Processing in Modern Communication: Challenges and Perspectives (Springer, 2012). He currently serves as the Chair of the IEEE Audio and Acoustic Signal Processing (AASP) Technical Committee. Emmanuel Vincent, Tuomas Virtanen, Sharon Gannot. John Wiley & Sons Inc. Loudspeakers: For Music Recording and Reproduction, 2nd edition is a practical guide, offering the tools and understanding needed to cut out the guess work of speakers choice and set up. Loudspeakers: For Music Recording and Reproduction, Second Edition is a comprehensive guide, offering the tools and understanding needed to cut out the guesswork from loudspeaker choice and set-up. Philip Newell and Keith Holland, with the assistance of Sergio Castro and Julius Newell, combine their years of experience in the design, application, and use of loudspeakers to cover a range of topics from drivers, cabinets, and crossovers, to amplifiers, cables, and surround sound. Whether using loudspeakers in a recording studio, mastering facility, broadcasting studio, film post-production facility, home, or musician’s studio, or if you simply aspire to improve your music-production system this book will help you make the right decisions. This new edition provides significant updates on the topics of digital control, calibration, and cinema loudspeaker systems. Philip Newell is a Fellow of the Institute of Acoustics (IOA), a member of both the Audio Engineering Society (AES) and the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE), and a member of the Seaplane Pilots Association. He has written ten books on acoustics and electroacoustics, and has published around 200 related articles, journal papers, and conference papers. Since 1992 he has lived in Spain, and during the course of his work has travelled to over 30 countries. His recording career has been very musically varied, from the Duke Ellington Orchestra to Queen, from The Who to The Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, from Mike Oldfield to John Cale, and from English brass bands to Welsh choirs. Dr Keith Holland is currently an Associate Professor (Senior Lecturer) at the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR), University of Southampton, UK, where he has worked full time as a student, researcher, and lecturer since 1984, and from where he obtained a BSc in Engineering Acoustics and Vibration in 1987, and a PhD on loudspeaker horns in 1993. Since 1990, Keith has taught electroacoustics and various other subjects, mainly audio-related, to under- and post-graduate students at the ISVR, and for ten of those years, also to the Tonmeister students at the University of Surrey. The artwork for Loudspeakers has been co-ordinated by Sergio Castro, a highly experienced musician, record producer, and recording engineer, with over 25 years of experience in the manufacturing of professional monitoring loudspeakers. By Philip Newell, Keith Holland. Speech Dereverberation presents current approaches to the problem of reverberation. It provides a review of topics in room acoustics and also describes performance measures for dereverberation. The algorithms are then explained with mathematical analysis and examples that enable the reader to see the strengths and weaknesses of the various techniques, as well as giving an understanding of the questions still to be addressed. Techniques rooted in speech enhancement are included, in addition to a treatment of multichannel blind acoustic system identification and inversion. The TRINICON framework is shown in the context of dereverberation to be a generalization of the signal processing for a range of analysis and enhancement techniques. Speech Dereverberation is suitable for students at masters and doctoral level, as well as established researchers. By Marcus Callies, Stefanie Hehner, Philipp Meer, Michael Westphal. This edited volume showcases recent initiatives introducing Teaching English as an International Language (TEIL) and Global Englishes Language Teaching (GELT) into English Language Teaching and teacher education in Germany. The worldwide spread, diversification, and globalization of the English language in the course of the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries has significant implications for English Language Teaching and teacher education. We are currently witnessing a paradigm shift towards Teaching English as an International Language (TEIL) that aims to promote multilingualism and awareness of the diversity of Englishes, increase exposure to this diversity, embrace multiculturalism, and foster cross-cultural awareness. Numerous initiatives that embrace TEIL can be observed around the world, but ELT and teacher education in Germany (and other European countries) appear to be largely unaffected by this development, with standard British and American English and the monolingual native speaker (including the corresponding cultural norms) still being very much at the center of attention. The present volume addresses this gap and is the first of its kind to showcase recent initiatives that aim at introducing TEIL into ELT and teacher education in Germany, but which have applicability and impact for other countries with comparable education systems and’traditional’ ELT practices in the Expanding Circle. The chapters in this book provide a balanced mix of conceptual, empirical, and practical studies and offer the perspectives of the many stakeholders involved in various settings of English language education whose voices have not often been heard, i. Marcus Callies is full professor and Chair of English Linguistics at the University of Bremen. His main research interests are corpus linguistics with a focus on lexico-grammatical variation and innovation in advanced learner varieties of English and World Englishes, Learner Corpus Research, teacher education, conceptual metaphor, and the language of sports. She is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Bremen, Germany, working in the teaching and research project “Varieties of English in Foreign Language teacher education”. Her research interests include Global Englishes, teacher cognitions, and the interface between linguistics and English language pedagogy. Philipp Meer is a PhD student and research assistant at the Chair of Variation Linguistics at the University of Münster, Germany, where he has worked since 2016. He is co-affiliated with the Speech Prosody Studies Group at the University of Campinas, Brazil. His research interests include World Englishes, sociophonetics & sociolinguistics, acoustic phonetics, speech prosody, language attitudes, and applied linguistics. Michael Westphal is a postdoctoral researcher at the Chair of Variation Linguistics at the University of Münster, Germany, where he also received his PhD in English linguistics in 2016 for his work on language variation on Jamaican Radio (published with John Benjamins in 2017). His research interests include World Englishes, language attitudes, variational pragmatics, and language in the media. Marcus Callies, Stefanie Hehner, Philipp Meer, Michael Westphal.
