Since 1990, I have enjoyed collecting and restoring antique radios and vintage audio…. They are also responsible for determining how they will re-attach these AR-2aX brass logos to the grilles and the grilles to their speaker cabinets. For sale is a pair of original (oem) Grilles & brass Logos, removed from one early and one late version, model AR-2aX loudspeaker. Most dimensions are identical except for the top half/cutout of grilles where openings are slightly different. Even with the variations of top cutouts, I believe either grille should cover the baffle of either speaker, whether an early version 2aX s/n. If any AR speaker guru knows otherwise… PLEASE send me a message so I can update this listing with correct information! The relative position of how their tweeters and mids would fit near the edges of the top cutouts of these grilles. Message if any questions. References to the grilles are as they are shown in pics e. Left side, right side. The grille on right with the lighter shade frame had the repair. Overall grill dimensions: 22.25″H x 11 & 15/16″W. Dimensions of BOTH round lower woofer cutouts: 10. Dimensions of top cutout for darker shaded LEFT grille are 8.75″H x 10 & 3/8″W. Dimensions of top cutout for lighter shaded RIGHT grille are 7 & 15/16″H x 11 & 1/16″W. Dimensions of brass Logos/Badges are 1″H x 2 & 1/16″W (possibly 2 & 1/32). The main repair/restoration was mending the 2 fractured thin/narrow sides for the RIGHT grille’s TOP cut-out. This is a very common problem for these grilles since the left & right sides of the TOP cutout are so thin, and cannot withstand much bending or pressure before they’ll break. In this case the narrow sides only had partial breaks. I was able to mend and reinforce frame edges by applying some wood glue between the 2 breaks, and also gluing a thin wood “splint” to the back side of each break. The former break areas are now more stable, and should hold up just fine… Esp if grille is handled gently. As thin/narrow as the areas are, they are still vulnerable and should not be bent with any pressure. I used Aleene’s Tacky Glue for reattaching the frayed grille fabric back to the frame. It’s very common for AR-2aX logos to have their small, rear screws break free and get lost (like these), so logos must be re-attached to the grilles in a different way… Usually with some type of adhesive. Tip: Logos could be attached to grilles in such a way that where speakers will be positioned vertically, like floor-standing speakers… OR logos could be attached/positioned in such a way that speakers will be positioned horizontally, like bookshelf speakers. The logos can be attached/glued in such a way as to cover over the tiny hole in the front right corner of grille where the old screw was installed.

New replacement grilles, patterned from an original AR-3 grille, complete with replacement grille cloth just like the original cloth along with new logo plates. This is for a pair. Early AR-3 grille frames were made of hard black plastic and slipped under the top and bottom ends of the cabinet. Later production utilized a fiber board frame that sat in the opening and was glued in place but did not slip under the ends. Either way, if you had to remove them, it’s very likely that they broke in the process. What we offer is a fiber board frame design and provide the instructions and adhesive to mount them in your existing speaker opening. Without impacting the acoustics, we strengthened the frames. Additionally, we used a higher strength fiber board material vs. The weaker fiber board AR used. The grille cloth is a white linen material with the little “slubs” (heavy pieces of thread) running up and down the grille. It has taken us six years to locate a source for importing this material. Replacement logo plates are now being manufactured for VINTAGE-AR. The plates are the correct size and the font is exact to the AR original. The material is a brass alloy which will prevent the inevitable tarnishing that occurred with the originals. We have used an adhesive backing rather than the screws that often broke off over the years. Including the cloth mounted to the frames, the dimensions are 11 5/8 x 22 5/8 inches. This is for a pair. These will also fit the AR-3a Improved and AR-3a Limited. During late production of the AR-3a speaker, AR was making speakers in Europe and made the cabinets somewhat different than those manufactured in the US. In particular, the solid wood beveled front edges were replaced with a thin square veneer design. Therefore, the grilles were of a different size. These are 24 x 13 inches.
