Acoustic Research AR-2a, Loudspeaker Pair, Oiled-Walnut, SN D 46874 – D 47790, Collectible. Wait for final invoice. Packing will be by double-box with Styrofoam surrounding speakers. AR-2a, Oiled-Walnut Cabinets, SNs D 46874 and D 47790, 1962. This pair of Acoustic Research AR-2a speakers is in excellent working and very good physical condition. AR-2as in this condition are rare and very collectible. The grills have never been removed with original grill-cloth staples in place, and the drivers are original and unmodified (observed through the grill with a bright light to verify). The woofers produce clean, excellent bass response with no audible distortion, even at moderately high listening levels, and the midrange drivers and tweeters are also fine. From the quality of the bass response, there is no indication of woofer-surround air leaks. These speakers have been checked out for about a week of listening and testing prior to this listing, and the speakers sound fine. The level-controls are the later Aetna-Pollock and are in good condition with some slight oxidation, but with sound through all individual drivers. The controls need to be twisted back and forth slightly to find the right spots, but all drivers work fine through the controls. These speakers have been in dry, air-conditioned storage for many years, which has helped to preserve them. The cabinets are finished in oiled walnut and are completely original without any additional “treatment” to the finish. The originality of these cabinets is unusual. Both are in very good condition, with some small glitches and dents that are mostly on the back edge of the speakers. The front grill moldings are nearly perfect. These speakers were always protected, and apparently had modest use over time. For the past twenty-five years, these have been stored in air-conditioned, low-humidity space, and there has been very little deterioration over time. The grills are excellent with barely. Noticeable dust outlines that seem typical of nearly all of the older speakers over time. The brass AR logo and “a” brass pins are also in fine condition. The cabinets are finished on all four sides. Earlier versions of the AR-2 model were finished on only three sides insofar as the speaker was designed to be placed horizontally due to the position of the two 5-inch midrange drivers. The AR-2a can be placed vertically, but the speaker will perform better when placed horizontally, as on a shelf or table. The AR-2a General Description. The AR-2a was Acoustic Research’s fourth speaker and was introduced in late 1959, a few months after the AR-3 was introduced. The AR-2a used the AR-3 1-inch dome tweeter in addition to the two 5-inch treated midrange units and an inproved 10-inch, Alnico-magnet acoustic-suspension woofer from the AR-2 model. These woofers use a treated-cloth surround, and typically these surrounds last for many years without any issues. The AR-2a went on to be very highly rated in all of the magazine critical reviews and through Consumer Reports ratings, and it was considered one of the finest loudspeakers available during this period, being surpassed only by the AR-3 model. When introduced, it was felt that the AR-2a was a match for any speaker system, even some that cost several times as much as the AR-2a. The AR-2a had superb, low-distortion bass response that approached the AR-3, and gave up only about -octave in the deepest bass when compared to the larger and more-expensive AR model with its 12-inch acoustic-suspension woofer. This was accomplished at a retail price of approximately one-half that of the AR-3. 2 Vintage Audiophile Acoustic Research AR-3a Loudspeakers Pair Oiled-Walnut

Pair of Really Nice Acoustic Research AR-3a Speakers. I have tested the speakers for about a month and It has been a pleasure listening to them. Here is what I know about this speakers. Most notably there is a crush point on the back corner of one of the speakers. The cabinets look nice for the age of these speakers. One of the adjustments for the Mid / Hi on one speaker seems to have limited effect and causes some static when adjusting the knob back and forth. The other three knobs seem to work as they should. There are some light nicks and scratches on the speakers housings and some paint transfer on the bottom of one, but they seem to be in very fine condition for speakers this old. I have the cover but they are damaged and will need repair. They are black cloth. This is a pair of Acoustic Research Ar-3A Loud Speakers that are unmolested. They are working great, but one nob you have to play with, it needs slight adjustment. The AR-3a was primarily designed primarily by Roy Allison and. Chuck McShane of Acoustic Research, Inc. And the speaker was introduced at the New York High Fidelity Music Show in October, 1967. One Acoustic Research AR-3 Loudspeaker Oiled-Walnut , excellent shape, couple small corner dings , the worst is shown, still the cab is very clean, no major scratches or water damage, woofer is frozen , crossovers needs work, you need to push it in to get sound out of the tweeter and mids. I spent no time attempting to repair so, could be a easy fix, I’m including a foam grill that has stains. A great candidate for a little project. Acoustic Research AR-3a Loudspeaker Pair, Oiled-Walnut Cabinets, SN 12821 & 12823, 1968, Excellent Original Condition. This pair of speakers was ordered in conjunction with an AR Amplifier and AR Turntable, updating my high-fidelity system. The AR-3as were used periodically after that date, but primarily remained stored. These AR-3a speakers are highly collectible and in excellent, original condition, both physically and electro-mechanically. The likelihood of finding a pair of 48-year-old AR-3a speakers in this condition is remote at best; most speakers of this type were used extensively for many years, and unfortunately, the cabinets, drivers and components tend to suffer over time accordingly. Also noteworthy is that the original versions of the AR-3a are the most collectible and the most. Desirable versions of the AR-3a built over time. There are no issues, and the all drivers work fine. There is some minimal oxidation of the level controls, but the oxidation is light because of the dry storage over time. These speakers have always been in a low-humidity setting for use or storage. They were recently tested and perform well. The woofers have a perfect “acoustic” seal, and the surrounds are like brand-new. Both midrange and high-frequency drivers work fine. The beige-linen grills are excellent with minimal deterioration or “dust” lines or fading, and the brass logos are in very good condition. The oiled-walnut cabinets are nearly flawless without any scratches, nicks, or marks. The cabinets on these speakers were finished in oiled-walnut finish and waxed. The early oil finishes were smooth and lustrous, the wax final coating gave a smooth appearance. Having been stored for many years, the walnut has not darkened particularly. These speakers were last briefly used by this owner in the late 1990s, and have been stored in air-conditioned storage since that time. Over the 48-year history of these remarkable loudspeakers, the total time of actual use was a few years in the late 1960s and the early 1970s and one year in 1998. The rest of the time these have been in storage. It should be noted that all of the 4-ohm 1. Inch midrange drivers used in the various iterations of the AR-3a and early AR-11s and AR-10s (before Ferrofluid in 1977) are electrically identical, but there are some slight cosmetic differences in the top plate. Additional Tests on these AR-3a loudspeakers, SN 12821 and 12823. I did another lengthy test on both AR-3a speakers on November 20, 2016, and the speakers performed beautifully. I did both low-power frequency sweeps (1W or less) and varied music tests. Actually, the level controls are not particularly oxidized — as one might expect — most likely due to very dry storage conditions and low total hours of use for these two speakers. All woofers, mid-range drivers and tweeters worked well, and the speakers really haven’t changed much from earlier usage. Also, the woofers are perfectly acoustically sealed, meaning that they return slowly when the cone is carefully depressed inward, and this is a very important characteristic of the properly working woofers. Both midrange drivers sound exactly alike with excellent output, and the tweeters are both surprisingly good with probably 3-5 dB lower output than the midrange, but this is exactly the way the speakers were designed originally. I don’t think there would be any reason for anyone to venture inside these very original speakers to modify them in any way. The level controls definitely work well across a wide range of travel even with some very slight dropouts here and there, but it would not be worthwhile to disassemble the speakers and upset the acoustic seal, etc. The controls can be rotated back and forth periodically to “clean” the contact surfaces, and that is all that would be needed. Acoustic Research AR-3a Loudspeaker Pair, Oiled-Walnut Cabinets, SN 12821 & 12823, 1968, Excellent Original Condition. This pair of speakers was ordered in conjunction with an AR Amplifier and AR Turntable, updating my high-fidelity system. The AR-3as were used periodically after that date, but primarily remained stored. These AR-3a speakers are highly collectible and in excellent, original condition, both physically and electro-mechanically. The likelihood of finding a pair of 48-year-old AR-3a speakers in this condition is remote at best; most speakers of this type were used extensively for many years, and unfortunately, the cabinets, drivers and components tend to suffer over time accordingly. Also noteworthy is that the original versions of the AR-3a are the most collectible and the most. Desirable versions of the AR-3a built over time. There are no issues, and the all drivers work fine. There is some minimal oxidation of the level controls, but the oxidation is light because of the dry storage over time. These speakers have always been in a low-humidity setting for use or storage. They were recently tested and perform well. The woofers have a perfect “acoustic” seal, and the surrounds are like brand-new. Both midrange and high-frequency drivers work fine. The beige-linen grills are excellent with minimal deterioration or “dust” lines or fading, and the brass logos are in very good condition. The oiled-walnut cabinets are nearly flawless without any scratches, nicks, or marks. The cabinets on these speakers were finished in oiled-walnut finish and waxed. The early oil finishes were smooth and lustrous, the wax final coating gave a smooth appearance. Having been stored for many years, the walnut has not darkened particularly. These speakers were last briefly used by this owner in the late 1990s, and have been stored in air-conditioned storage since that time. Over the 48-year history of these remarkable loudspeakers, the total time of actual use was a few years in the late 1960s and the early 1970s and one year in 1998. The rest of the time these have been in storage. It should be noted that all of the 4-ohm 1. (original “A” versions) Loudspeaker Pair, Oiled-Walnut Cabinets, SN A 4516 and A 4628, VG-to-Excellent Condition. Loudspeaker, SN A-4516 & A-4628. This pair of AR-10Pi speakers are the original, early versions built in late-1975 or early 1976, and are finished on all sides in a beautiful oiled-walnut finish. The serial numbers are A 4516 and A 4628. This “A” version of the AR-10Pi is a. More desirable, but less common, version of this series than the later “B” version. This version also has the first iteration yellow-dome. 75-inch treated-cloth tweeter (non Ferrofluid version), and therefore there is no possibility of drying Ferrofluid in these tweeters. The midrange drivers (1.5-inch soft dome) are also non-Ferrofluid versions. The cabinets are in very good-to-excellent condition overall except for some slight marks and scratches, but the speaker look great overall. The back-side of one of the speakers has some slight delamination of the veneer and some veneer cracking, a common problem with the original-series version. “B” versionreally not as elegant a speakerremedied this problem with a different molding around the back of the cabinet. There is a small indentation on the grill molding area, but it is small and not very noticeable. The original, machined-foam grills are still in fine condition, which is very unusual. There is little deterioration (if at all) in these urethane-foam grills, which is remarkable. Both grills are about equal. The operating performance of these speakers is basically perfect. The resonance was exactly 41 Hz for both cabinets, exactly within spec; the woofers’ frequency response measured flat to within 1.5 dB from 38-500 Hz on axis and the harmonic distortion (measured with an HP339A distortion analyzer) for both speakers measured less than 8% at 20 Hz with 20 watts rms input! At 10 watts, the distortion was on the order of 5% down to 20 Hz, and at 1 watt (the “standard” measurement) input, distortion was under 3% down to 20 Hz. In short, the AR 12-inch woofer wasand still isamong the very finest low-frequency reproducers ever designed, and these woofers easily meet that original specification. The midrange and tweeter drivers work perfectly, and the switch level controls for speaker placement “Pi” control contour (autotransformer) work fine.
