For sale is a pair of classic Acoustic Research AR-2ax loudspeakers, one of the most respected and historically important acoustic suspension speakers of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Both speakers have been tested and are producing sound from all drivers. These are original vintage speakers and remain excellent candidates for restoration while still retaining their classic AR character. The AR-2ax is widely regarded as one of the landmark loudspeaker designs from Acoustic Research and helped establish the East Coast sound that became famous for its smooth tonal balance, natural vocals, and accurate acoustic presentation. These speakers are known for. Outstanding performance with jazz, vocals, classical, and acoustic music. Historical significance among vintage hi-fi enthusiasts. Many listeners consider the AR-2ax one of the best values in vintage American loudspeakers and a worthy restoration project. Both speakers have been tested and are producing sound. One grille was carefully removed to inspect the drivers and internal condition. The other speaker retains its original intact grille. Both speakers produce sound and are listenable in their current condition. However, as with most original AR speakers of this age, they would benefit significantly from restoration. To restore these speakers closer to their original performance, the following is recommended. Replacement of original crossover capacitors. Cleaning or replacement of the level control potentiometers. Inspection and resealing of the acoustic suspension cabinets if necessary. The potentiometers are a well-known maintenance item on vintage AR speakers and often cause reduced output from the midrange and tweeter circuits. They have been well-cared for in a smoke-free home. Driver 1: Excellent original condition, no damage. Driver 2: Features a 4-inch tear from a signal surge that has been repaired with flexible rubber/vinyl adhesive. Both drivers have been fully tested. There is NO voice-coil rub or scratching. This pair of cabinets were my Dad’s. I had put wood preservative on them a few months ago. The cones were re-coned a few months ago. 1 sounds perfect, the other one needs to be pushed in to the cone and then is strong. I don’t know the problem, and I did not check both until after the re-coning. Voice coil is still intact as it has sound. The other high and mid range are good. Too heavy for me to move around. We’ll go over speakers when you come to look them over.
