Time capsule mid-60’s AR2ax in unfinished pine. These were found in barely touched condition with a thick coat of white enamel paint. I have a feeling these were brought home and immediately painted, over 50 years ago, to match the home decor. It was a pain to sand away the paint, but what sat beneath were beautiful pine cabinets that had never been bumped, , nicked, scratched, spilled upon, or exposed to humidity. It took three hours to sand away the white paint, but now they look fantastic. There are still some traces of white paint on the cabinets – it can be removed either with more sanding or applying light alcohol. I didn’t want to oversand. All drivers are in excellent working condition and the pots, which were in very good non-corroded condition, have been cleaned and wire-brushed. Very good contact throughout the range of adjustment. Grills have been brushed and are in good to very good condition. There are some weak spots in the grill frames from removal, but they sit snug and secure in the cabinets – see photos. Original brass logo badges are included. Only one speaker has the paperwork glued to the back, and the serial number is 32768. These are definitely a matched set and were probably made 1966 or 67. The speakers sound fantastic. They have been recapped with new Dayton electrolytic capacitors. I have done this many times. The tweeters are strong – this is not always the case with the orange dome tweeters in AR speakers. They can lose response from age or overuse. These tweeters do not seem to have been stressed at all. I have had several pairs of AR2ax over the years and these definitely sound the best. Full balanced sound with the incredible AR bass. It takes a strong tweeter to not be overwhelmed by the bass these speakers produce. Usually that is the difference between a “good” and a “great” AR2ax.
