Offered for your consideration is a set of highly sought after Vintage Acoustic Research AR 3a speakers. They have been refurbished to a high standard. 12 Woofers – new surrounds. Crossover – all new caps from Dayton Audio. Pots – disassembled, inspected, cleaned, and lubricated. Baffles – old glue and such removed, repainted. Back documents – Covered with removable clear plastic film to preserve them. Grills – in excellent condition. Please note the tweeter and midrange seem to be fine, however, given their age, consideration of rebuilding them must be given. Vintage all original pair of AR-3A solid wood speakers. I got these from the original owner who took really good care of them. I re-foamed the woofers and they sound great! Solid wood cases are in beautiful condition as you can see in the pictures. Grills are not perfect but very respectable. It was discovered that one of the mid-range speakers was shot, but they just happened to have an original one on the shelf, I couldn’t believe it. Also, one of the “3’s” was missing, and they had that too, amazing! I was told that these AR’s are in the best condition in terms of exterior condition that they have ever seen, and they now function acoustically superbly as well. The grill cloth is excellent considering the age, and the walnut literally does not have a scratch (well maybe one, but I didn’t see it) on it, and although the pictures may suggest otherwise, they have not been refinished. Some of the original paperwork is included with these iconic survivors! Both mid-range speakers are ferrite speakers not alnico, and the one that was replaced was the same as the one which wasn’t so either they were both replaced at some time long ago (which seems unlikely) or perhaps these AR 3’s were produced late in the production run and Acoustic Research used parts which were being used in the AR 3A model, we don’t know. The woofers are original Alnico in in each and the tweeters are original. I have uploaded a picture of the speaker with the replaced mid-range, and I refuse to take the other grill off because it is so delicate, and the grill cloth is just about perfect.. One slip and that would not be the case. I’ve decided to re-list them for a fairly limited time and then just hang on to them if they don’t sell because I just love them. A complete AR system in upgraded condition and with wooden cases, a rare opportunity. Both units have been recently serviced by Atlantic Systems Electronics, Hanover, MA an authorized McIntosh repair center. Amplifier Capacitors (5) were replaced, Tuner was calibrated and completely tested. Both units are operating properly and to specifications. Face plates are scratch free and all lettering is in great original condition. Tuner working and recently calibrated Serial # T02056. Amplifier all functions operating to specs as originally designed Serial # AU11391. This system sounds amazing and is highly collectible and sought after. AR2ax – no holes in grill cloths they have the A badge and the AR BADGE also the papers are still attached with serial #’s. Super nice WALNUT cases. No cup rings or planter rings. LOOK closely at the pics. They are crazy nice- any color variation is just the WALNUT grain. Everything is A+ awesome but the pots are needing to be hit with deoxite + cleaned or just switched out. I did it once last year it was easy just too busy now.. Anyway – you can google the specs if you need them; they will rock the house either way. Double boxed- I’m a speaker packing expert.
