Look at this set of iconic AR 4xs!! One of the finest sounding 2 way to come out of the 60s/70s! Hook these up to a nice tube receiver, break out the single malt, Cubans, and some Coltrane and you have the makings for a stellar evening at home!! Although everything functions as it should, the tweeter controls seem to have a dead spot at full maximum… Just tweak back a touch and theyre fine. With the exception of one of the info sheets stapled to the back these speakers are complete… And to top it off, they are the more rare. Most have MDF as the speaker board and the the back… These have actual plywood… Much stiffer which allows for great bass response from a small package! But its more expensive than MDF! The finish was lightly sanded for a baby smooth feel and then 3 coats of walnut Danish oil was applied with a light sand in between. Oh yeah, as are the original grills with original badges!!! I restored these two years ago for my personal collection. Really clean set and in Fabulous Condition. Extremely Nice Looking Speaker Cabinets and Grills! Matched Set of speakers and crossover components. These have been fully serviced and upgraded and are ready to play. All Drivers are original and Matched. New MIL Grade Audio Caps installed, originals were out of tolerance. They each measured 12Uf+. Spec calls for 6Uf. Woofers were sealed with Vintage AR cloth surround sealer to ensure Acoustical Integrity of Cabinets and Speakers. Tweeters are never a problem, they are solid and sounding as they should. This is modern production wirewound potentiometer. An exact copy of the original pot (in terms of values 16Ohm / 25 Watt), but much better in terms of reliability and quality. The pot has a enlarged ceramic body that houses the coil and allows much better heat dissipation. Large surface and material allows the heat to dissipate much better, compared to the original pots. Also the coil and the wiper remain hidden from the sulfur emissions. Speakers have been thoroughly tested and sound fantastic. Grills and Badges are in near perfect condition except for 1 small nick left speaker lower left. Cabinets are in Great condition for their 50+ year age, Few minor scratches and nicks are visible, please see pictures. Great shape for something that was made in 1965! However, the basic AR theme of great bass in compact enclosures probably reached its zenith with the 1964 introduction of the small AR-4, an 8 version of the AR-1 and AR-3s twelve-inch system, but in an enclosure barely 1/3 the size of the AR-1 and AR-3. 1965 saw the debut of the famous AR-4x with its vastly improved new 2 ½-inch tweeter, resulting in a system that spanned from 55-15kHz at ± 3dB on axis! These smaller AR speakers brought true hi-fidelity sound to hundreds of thousands of people, yet they sounded very similar to their bigger brethren. Like the AR-3 at the high end of the scale, the budget-priced 4x had no real, true competition for years.
