The Acoustic Research AR-5 Tower Speakers are a pair of right and left speakers with an integrated powered subwoofer. The sleek black speakers have an audiophile sound. Perfect for a 2.0 channel home audio system, these wired speakers from Acoustic Research offer a high-quality listening experience with a modern design. Ideal for TV, video, and music lovers looking to enhance their home audio setup. When I first got these speakers they needed a few things. I wound up upgrading the surrounds, recapped the amps and a few other things. I have been blessed to evaluate many different speakers over the years. These AR5s are exceptional. They seem to do everything right. The 300 watt subwoofer produces as much bass as one could possibly hope for. Everyone I have let listen to these have all been impressed. Smooth, detailed non-fatiguing sound. I had intended on keeping these but circumstances are so that I need to sell them.

I spared no expense to see just how good a Ar3a could become with some modern drivers. Had the work farmed out to a experienced professional. He chose Morel and Scan Speak drivers and re capped the cross overs and had the cabs refinished. I spent more on just the 4 drivers than my asking price! I had another pair of stock Ar3a’s and did a/b tests and there was no comparison. These destroyed the stock pair but if you are a purist… Not for you/ binding posts upgraded and pesky trim pots removed. I own all the. These are one of the finest set of three-way speakers Ive ever owned. Exceptional sound with no fatigue. Classical, jazz and rock music they play it all. I have upgraded the tweeters to an AR 58s type which just took them to the next level! This is the same tweeter used in the 91 and the famous AR9 flagship. Many people who have owned the 3a speakers commonly complain of a low output tweeters as well as susceptible to being blown as they dont handle the power. Thats just a distant memory now that Ive performed this upgrade. I also replaced both woofers with the newer production 12 woofer. Same time period as the AR9. Excellent woofer seal for that AR patent acoustic suspension. I have put high power amplifiers behind these speakers with breath taking results. Carver and Kenwood solid state amps to be exact. The potentiometers work pretty well with maybe a down spot here or there but function plenty good to enjoy. Capacitors are newer and easily swapped of you care to go the boutique route. Feel free to contact me if you want that service performed. The condition is very good for the age of these speakers. I have treated these to one coat of Howards feed and wax wood polish about six months ago. Check my feedback as I do a great job packing items with care. ACOUSTIC RESEARCH SPEAKERS AR3a. # 85448 and 85456. We had them professionaly restored. New surrounds for the woofers. Also, the four potentiometers were changed. The crossovers have been upgraded with Sprague capacitors. All necessary updates have been made and they sound better than ever. Please see my pictures. These speakers are in good operational condition and also in good physical condition. If you have any questions regarding these, please ask. All speakers in each cabinet are fully functional. The mid-range and tweeter are original to these cabinets. The woofers were replaced with early AR-2ax woofers that have cloth surrounds instead of the original ones that had rubber surrounds. The original ones would deteriorate, and that is the condition that I found these speakers in – the woofer needed refoaming. So I upgraded the woofers to the version with cloth surrounds. These upgraded woofer surrounds are excellent and the cloth surrounds have been recoated to make them air tight. I really prefer these woofers over the original ones as I believe they move more air and thus provide a more solid bass feel. Just my opinion, but I did have these in a system in my house for the last 5 years, and I enjoyed them very much. With the addition of some other sets of speakers, I have decided to let these speakers go. If you are familiar with AR speakers, you know that they are not very pretty under the grill panel. These panels were not to be removed originally. They are now removable. The tweeter and midrange potentiometers for adjusting the highs and midrange frequeny volumes really need some cleaning. They are scratchy, although you can still use them and they still work. You just have to move the switches around to find those sweet spots. Not unusual for these speakers and the age. The cabinets are in pretty good condition. I have restained them, so they look pretty good. There is one scuff on the side of one speaker cabinet. The cabinets are not perfect, but they look pretty good. The grills are in not-so-good condition. They have thinned over the years and have a few little holes. If I were keeping these, I would replace the grills with some new reproduction cloths that look just like the originals. Overall, a really nice set of vintage AR’s.
