This is one pair of Acoustic Research AR-3 Vintage Matching Speakers bought new by me at the same time in 1963 or1964. The serial number on one is 05601, but the paper with serial number on the other is missing, but they were bought as a pair. They have not been used for the past 20 years, and I recently powered them up to check them out. The woofers fired up immediately and sounded as you would expect, but both mid range and tweeters were intermittent or with no sound at all so I assume the pots will have to be cleaned or replaced because when I last used them over 20 years ago they sounded perfect. They have never been worked on or opened, except for the grill, and they have resided in a smoke and pet free home since new. Both cabinets are in very nice condition with few scratches or marks, The grill cloth is the original but is not in good condition and should be replaced and one grill cloth frame is cracked but should be easy to repair. Speakers have sound from what seems to be the woofers or the bottom speakers. Tweeters don’t seem to work not sure if it is the switch or the tweeter. Vintage AR-2A Speakers with close serial numbers from a 1 owner collection. I was told that the speakers were serviced in 2008 and have had less than 10 minutes of play time since then. Apparently the capacitors were replaced, cones glued and 1 center treated, mid pots replaced and new grille cloth. Upon initial testing both speakers had non functioning tweeters. I moved the High Pots on the back and I was able to get one to come back. On the speaker that I was unable to recover the tweeter one mid-range driver appears stuck and does not produce sound. All of the other drivers are working. One woofer solder connection to the cone appears loose. The grilles are in fair condition, one frame has creases on a thin part but still holds together. The cabinets have scratches. I have not opened these to verify service. Great candidates for restoration. Even though the above mentioned issues these speakers still sound excellent!
