Vintage pair of Acoustic Research AR-4x bookshelf speakers. Tested and sound great. One does have a small tear in the cloth cover and a little discoloration around the edges of the cloth – the other has a very light scratch on one side – both show in the pics – neither of course affects function. Vintage Acoustic Research AR3 Speakers. Very hard to find AR3 (not 3a) vintage 3 way circa 1950s acquired from original owner along with a Pioneer SX-1050 (also for sale). This was prior to the one woofer getting refoamed and spider repaired. Please note the last few pics as there was a problem with one of the woofers which was rattling at certain frequencies. Turns out the spider had cracked and needed to be replaced along with a new foam surround. The voice coil was fine. This was done by a gentleman (RoyC) that restores vintage AR. He is well known on the forums. The paperwork says 1954 I think. I decided to replace the old pots with 8ohm lpads and new Bennic capacitors. They opened the mid and high considerably and can now be properly controlled from the speaker and receiver as well. They sound awesome like vintage AR should. I bit bolder abd deeper than my AR2ax. The cabinets were cleaned abd veneer repaired. I believe they are Mahogany. They look and sound great for this vintage. AR4X ACOUSTIC RESEARCH SPEAKERS VERY NICE ORIGINAL W ORG. PAPERWORK Excellent Working Condition. Very clean working condition. All sides are very clean with no damage at all. Grills are super nice with one having a very slight hard to see stain on front. (see last photo with ruler). I have not had the grill covers off as I they are perfect and I do not want to cause damage. I understand that the grills on these were originally glued when manufactured. I see no sign they have been removed at any time, and are still tight to the case. The speakers have tested in good working condition. Speakers are 19″ x 10″ each. Serial numbers are 141383 & 141363. It was discovered that one of the mid-range speakers was shot, but they just happened to have an original one on the shelf, I couldn’t believe it. Also, one of the “3’s” was missing, and they had that too, amazing! I was told that these AR’s are in the best condition in terms of exterior condition that they have ever seen, and they now function acoustically superbly as well. The grill cloth is excellent considering the age, and the walnut literally does not have a scratch (well maybe one, but I didn’t see it) on it, and although the pictures may suggest otherwise, they have not been refinished. Some of the original paperwork is included with these iconic survivors! Both mid-range speakers are ferrite speakers not alnico, and the one that was replaced was the same as the one which wasn’t so either they were both replaced at some time long ago (which seems unlikely) or perhaps these AR 3’s were produced late in the production run and Acoustic Research used parts which were being used in the AR 3A model, we don’t know. The woofers are original Alnico in in each and the tweeters are original. I have uploaded a picture of the speaker with the replaced mid-range, and I refuse to take the other grill off because it is so delicate, and the grill cloth is just about perfect.. One slip and that would not be the case. I’ve decided to re-list them for a fairly limited time and then just hang on to them if they don’t sell because I just love them.
