This listing is for a pair of fully restored Acoustic Research AR3 speakers. The speakers were restored by a professional local speaker repair company. First of all, I took these photos as night and will re-take them in natural daylight do you can see them in greater detail and update the posting. Original AR3 replacement mid range speakers. Glue applied to any loose areas on cabinets. New grill cloth was put on with original emblems. This is not the original style cloth, which is 18 ct lambswool 100% linen. The grill frames are slightly warped on the tops and a bit loose. I did not add velcro as the next owner may want to install the original style grill cloth. The serial numbers are close, C44013 & C44037. Now, lets go over these speakers. They perform and sound wonderful, as they should with a full restoration. The new capacitors and potentiometers made today are of higher quality than the 50’s/60’s as well. The main detail to cover are the cabinets. These cabinets must have at one point been in an area with humidity and potentially have been exposed to water. The tops of one of the speakers has some veneer’lift’ as you can see in the photo. The speaker with the veneer lift (due to the mdf under the veneer expanding) also has some’bubbling’ along the veneer. This is also pictured, and it not very noticeable unless you are close and looking at the top. Also, one of the speaker bases (the first photographed speaker) has a seam slightly open, although it is acoustically sealed as the cabinets were re-glued at seams to assure acoustic suspension. The wood veneer has been sanded and re-stained, and actually are very attractive. Visually, from a listening distance, which would never be any closer than 6 feet, they are very attractive speakers. You can just slightly notice the veneer lift on the one speaker, and that’s about it. If I were to rate the cabinets, I would give the structure of the cabinets a 6/10 because of the previous damage. I would give the appearance of the veneer restoration an 8.5/10, dare I say 9. The wood grain really pops and its just the right amount of sheen. They have been restored wonderfully.
