Pr ACOUSTIC RESEARCH AR-2ax Speakers – early AlNiCo magnet woofers, fabric i. Not foam woofer surrounds, new L-pads for level controls. I had this pair fully restored by a cabinet maker and speaker designer/restorer friend of mine who I have worked with for years. This pair was in good cosmetic condition when I got them, so they did not require much. L-pads were cleaned, but they remained intermittent. So, they were replaced with proper new 16-ohm L-pads, which is the same as stock. Woofers are the early, desirable Alnico magnet version with cloth surrounds. The surrounds were re-sealed with the proper fabric doping (the fabric surrounds can leak air after all these years and the the re-sealing stops it and helps bass performance). I have many fond memories of that all-AR system. So, I can demo the speakers for potential buyers. I read an interesting comment on the Classic Speaker Pages forum in a discussion of the history of AR speakers. Then the nadir of AR publicity in the 3a timeframe: A’bad’ review of the 3a in Consumer Reports magazine, where they ended up saying that the 2axat half the pricewas actually a better speaker and that the 3 sounded better than the 3a.
