Dynamic ACOUSTIC RESEARCH AR9 Hi-Res Bi-Amp / Bi-Wire Tower Speakers. Most people know of Acoustic Research (AR) as the company that pioneered the acoustic suspension speaker system back in 1954 and came out worth such incredible speakers such as the AR3 and 3a, AR9 and LST Models. Founded by Ed Villchur and Henry Kloss, AR had a meteoric rise in fame and within a decade had a dominant market share with their speaker line. Today, they are just a shadow of what they once were, but they had a few other hits before the creative juices within the company left for better opportunities. These very unique AR9 Tower Speakers are one of Acoustic Researchs rarest models and one of their last efforts of creativity. These AR9 Hi-Res speakers have an incredibly cool baffle design as you can see in the close up photos. The upper insert that surrounds the tweeter and midranges is a thick, soft rubberized bezel, and it has been designed to swell around the tweeter to form a diffraction ring. The midranges are arranged in the dAppollito Configuration, which require two perfectly matched midranges in order to reap the benefits of such a design, and AR has pulled it off on this AR9 design. Although these are pretty efficient speakers at 92 dB and the spec sheet says that you can drive them at just 20 watts of power, my experience has been that if you want to fully pressurize a large room you want a quality amplifier at least 100 watts of power and lots of headroom. They are rated at 250 watts maximum power. However, this is not just a powerhouse, but a very refined speaker system. Correctly positioning them in a room takes more effort than with most speakers as small changes in distance for boundaries such as a back or side wall, effects on a low ceiling or bounces from a large window all strongly affect the dynamics. You will need to essentially tune it to your room by positioning, but the work will pay off huge dividends when you have it just right. Functionally everything works beautifully there are no issues. Cosmetically, all eight original drivers are pristine with no marks on them, and the surrounds are excellent. Both of the unique soft front baffles are in exceptional condition, with just the slightest touch of abrasion to the right of one of the tweeters. These soft front baffles are held tightly to the front face of the cabinet along the perimeter of the baffle and are very secure, but the center portion has some flexibility and is noticeable above the bottom woofer. It is not at all an issue, but it is just that one is a bit more bowed outward than the other. The cabinets themselves are in very good shape overall as you can see from the photos, but they do have some blemishes. The most notable is some swelling on the top surface and top side of one cabinet, pointed out in a detail photo. There are also some minor scuffs and edge dings on both cabinets. The long front grills have fresh grill cloth and look fantastic. The round side grills are original fabric and are in very good condition with just a few minor areas with tufted fabric – not prominent at all.
