The Acoustic Research Part No. 200003-0 was an 8-bolt, stamped-steel, ceramic-ferrite-magnet, 12-inch diameter, 4 acoustic-suspension woofer introduced in late 1969 in the AR-3areplacing the earlier cast-aluminum AR-3 woofer. And was used in a variety of AR speakers for many years. The performance of the ferrite-magnet woofer is nearly identical in most respects to the original Alnico woofer. This woofer is designed to work in the AR-3a-type sealed enclosure with a ratio of 85% acoustic and 15% mechanical suspension restoring force. The earliest ferrite-magnet version, shown here, is an early “long-wire” version with the most-compliant suspension. These earliest woofers had a very low free-air resonance, 16-17Hz. Some as low as 15 Hz, and were capable of exceptionally low harmonic distortion when mounted in the exact-size, 1.48 cu. To this extent, this woofer system has not been surpassed in low-distortion, smooth-bass output from a system of this design or size. Mounted in the precise AR sealed enclosure, fully braced and filled with the optimum amount of glass fiber damping material for a Q of. 7-1.0, depending on the system configuration, the AR woofer is flat to within ±1.3 dB or better from 40 Hz to 575 Hz. 12-inch diameter frame, 8-bolt (machine screw) mounting. 4 impedance (2.5 DCR). 2-inch diameter, high-current voice coil on Kapton former. 1.125-inch voice-coil height in. 10.25 lb ceramic-ferrite and Armco Iron Magnetic Structure. 80-gm felted-asphalt paper cone, highly damped. 0.625 diameter half-round urethane-polymer surround “skiver”. High-strength stamped-steel basket (“frame”). Fs 17.5 Hz, ±15%. Output at 50Hz ±. 5dB of piston-band efficiency. Efficiency 88-89dB SPL re. ARPN 200003-0 Specific Item Description. This woofer is in excellent condition and has been carefully bench-tested for linearity and distortion. It was “re-foamed” in 2016 with a 5/8-inch urethane-polymer surround, and the woofer was completely shimmed for exact alignment. It works flawlessly and should provide many years of excellent service. It must be mounted in an AR-type sealed enclosure as described previously. This AR woofer is frequently, inaccurately , referred to as an “11-inch” woofer because of the flat side sections, but the nominal overall diameter of the frame is 12 inches. Woofer “size” is determined by the frame size in inches or millimeters, whereas tweeter “size” is determined by the cone or dome diameter.
