The AR-3 entered the market in 1958, four years after the first ever acoustic suspension loudspeaker, the AR-1 was introduced. The first ever, hemispherical dome direct radiator tweeter, and dome mid range, developed and designed by Edgar Villchur, along with his 1954 AR-1 12 inch woofer, with fiber surround, foam diffractor, and alinco magnet, which had been another speaker technology landmark, as it was the first ever commercial acoustic suspension speaker. The result was a speaker that produce music more accurately than any other speaker at it’s time and is until today one of the highest performing speakers available when measuring accuracy. Its reputation is for being the most accurate speaker at any cost. These particular units have been very well cared for. THEY HAVE LOW CONSECUTIVE SERIAL#’S, WITH ALL INSPECTION PLACARDS IN PLACE… Other than the two small odd burn circles on the top of the one speaker, which I sanded, and filled with a high quality wood filler, and stained to the best of my ability, (to which I’m not a quality woodworker), the cabinets are in very good easily restorable condition. They are oiled walnut, They were rubbed with Howards walnut restore-a-finish, and buffed with feed-n-wax orange oil. There are scratches, and dings and rub marks, but in comparison to the other 60-year-old speakers, these are in the top 20%. They are 100% original to my knowledge, but seem to be missing the number three on the grills, which are pretty flawless, unless these are an earlier model. With that being said, there’s no way I can truly guarantee that these drivers are in working order. I chose not to disrupt the originality of the woofer, to access the pots, as I’m not experienced in this situation either. All the pots are dirty, and need to be properly cleaned or refurbished, but the other drivers worked perfectly, except the one tweeter and one mid range. Also, the surround on one woofer has three indentations, like dents in the roll, in picture 3… At 3o’clock, 6:30, and 10o’clock It is common for the fiber of this age to lose its consistency, or form, but still plays very well.
