This is a Vintage Pair of Acoustic Research AR-4X Speakers. Speakers tested and working very good. Woofers are still nice and pliable. Looks like they were taken care of aside from some chips and scrapes on the cabinets. Previous owner had stuck some felt pads on the long sides to lay them over. I removed them with some rubbing alcohol, and the wood is a little dry in those areas (6 spots on the long side of each speaker) see photos. I thing a little finishing oil would improve the appearance. The High Frequency attenuators are scratchy and intermittent across their range. I tried getting some contact cleaner in there along the post but was unsuccessful. I was able to fiddle with them enough to get the tweeters working with the attenuators turned most of the way up. Speakers have nice detailed sound, though not as punchy as my Polk Audio T90e’s. Not really a fair comparison. Grills were stapled – not glued. I was able to ease them out with a tool I fabricated out of the hack saw blade. I ground the blade down leaving only one tooth at the end. I was able to slide it in sideways next to the staple, then turn it 90 degrees to get the tooth under the staple, and gently pull the staple out with vice-grips. Worked like a charm. No damage to the grill cloth, just the imprint of were the staple was. I’m including the tool with the speakers. The grills seem to stay in place as long as the speaker is upright, or velcro could be installed.
