Vintage, classic, famous Acoustic Research AR4x speakers in near mint condition, considering their age. Completely functional and they sound and look wonderful. If you wonder what the difference between the AR-4 and AR-4x is, here is a short simple answer: It´s all about the tweeter! The AR-4 is the older, in 1964. The AR-4x is its successor and from late 1965 and 1966. The AR-4x has 2 1/2″ cone tweeters, whereas the AR-4 has 3 1/2″ tweeters. The AR-4x received outstanding reviews and is still famous today for its sound quality. The basic AR theme of great bass in compact enclosures probably reached its zenith with the 1964 introduction of the small AR-4, an 8 version of the AR-1 and AR-3s twelve-inch system, but in an enclosure barely 1/3 the size of the AR-1 and AR-3. 1965 saw the debut of the famous AR-4x with its vastly improved new 2 ½-inch tweeter, resulting in a system that spanned from 55-15kHz at ± 3dB on axis! These smaller AR speakers brought true hi-fidelity sound to hundreds of thousands of people, yet they sounded very similar to their bigger brethren. Like the AR-3 at the high end of the scale, the AR4x had no real competition. These speakers are from my collection of classic, vintage speaker systems. Kept in a smoke-free home. These near mint condition AR4x’s are a rare find and a treasure. Type: 2 way, 2 driver loudspeaker system. Bass: 1 x 8 cone. Tweeter: 1 x 2.5 wide dispersion cone. Finish: oiled walnut, birch, pine.
