These little guys have way more bottom end than I ever thought possible in a bookshelf. They are not perfect, but certainly have a lot going for them. We put the meter to them and got just about 5.0 Ohms on each (see photos). They have seen decades of service. It looks like crayola on the face of one of the grills. One of the bottoms appears to have sat in a damp location, but there is no weakness to the cabinet construction. After checking the voice coils we wired them to our Sansui 6000 series and was blown away with the deep and consistent bottom end. They seem to lack a bit on the top-end. We noticed the attenuator in the crossovers is very sticky (on both of them) and neither control appears to change any audio value. Both speakers will likely need some maintenance. There are nicks here and there, but again the construction is solid and they are surprisingly heavy for such a small bookshelf. Considering the AR4X legacy, a better candidate for full restore we’ve rarely seen. The item “Pair of Vintage Acoustic Research AR-4x Speakers Walnut TESTED!
