Acoustic Research AR4 Speakers (Restored)
I bought two pair of AR4 line speakers and it turned out one of them were original AR4s (not AR4x nor AR4xa). I’ve been using them for a number of years in our main system in the dining room. They really are great speakers. I just got a pair of KLH Model 5s (I also fully restored those) to put in their place and will use the AR4x’s (also restored) when I want to go small. So I’m letting these go. The serial numbers are <300 apart. Physical - When I got them they were in pretty rough physical shape (as most of these are). I lightly sanded by hand as the veneer on these things is very thin and brittle. I applied mineral oil to give the wood some life. I patched the veneer in two places (both on back top corners) to make them more presentable. The corners were crushed a bit so I had to build them back up with some bondo to get the corners crisp again before patching the veneer. There are still some places where the veneer is worn down to nothing. I did my best to capture those areas in the photos. Function - The tweeters were dead when I got them. I did my best to clean the spring pot (I forget what they are called) treble adjustment but that didn't do it. I tested the capacitors and they were dead. So I replaced them with dayton audio caps. I did leave the original capacitors inside as I know some folks like to have them (but they do not work). The pots are still original and still have dead spots but I can generally get it where I want it. I wanted to leave them original as possible as they are the AR4. On my AR4x speakers I changed out the pots, but I opted not to on these. I also doped the cloth surrounds with the sealer from vintage-ar. When resealing the cabinets I used a high grade speaker foam so future servicing is much easier than with the putty. These have been great speakers for me but I don't want them to sit in my basement. I want someone to get use out of them. Too many hours into them to have them not being used. Please see my feedback as people often compliment my packing. Let me know if you have any questions.
