ACOUSTIC RESEARCH AR-1 SPEAKER CLASSIC VINTAGE ICON 1950’S SPEAKER WITH WESTERN ELECTRIC DESIGN 755A DRIVER SERVICED AND TESTED IN EXCELLENT WORKING CONDITION AND IN EXCELLENT EXTERIOR CONDITION. Both are in excellent working condition and were serviced and tested at a pro speaker shop on the Twin Cities – Midwest Speaker. This speaker has the highly desirable Western Electric design 755A driver that was produced by Altec and the original 12 woofer. Both the 755A driver and the woofer were separately tested and are in excellent working condition and the speaker as a whole with crossover is in excellent working condition as tested. A new capacitor in place of the original 2 capacitors was installed and the original large can capacitor was left in place. A new control pot was installed for the 755A driver and the original pot will be included for those wanting the original part. Both the 755A driver and 12′ woofer are in excellent exterior condition with no punctures or tears in the cones and they have some normal moderate age wear. The speaker wood cabinet is in very nice excellent exterior condition with some moderate wear light scratches but is in great condition given age. The grill is in excellent condition with moderate wear and had the original AR badge. The rear connects are in excellent condition. The paper info sheer has come off but will be included. The model AR-1 speaker is an iconic historically significant speaker in that it was the first to use the acoustic suspension technology for low distortion of lower frequencies. The 12 woofer has a cast aluminum frame, an Alnico magnet, and treated cloth cone surround for a free suspension. The AR-1 could reproduce frequencies down to 32 cycles per second with very low distortion, something the large mechanical suspension speakers could not do. The sealed cabinet provided a cushion of air. The AR-1 could provide the much improved low frequency in a much smaller cabinet. The high frequencies are handled by the 8 755A driver, a Western Electric design that was produced by Altec. The AR-1 was co-designed by Henry Kloss and Edgar Villchur and was unveiled in 1954 at the New York Audio Fair. Dimensions: 25″H x 14″W x 11D.
