Here is a very nice pair of AR-2ax speakers that have been restored to like new working condition and very good cosmetic condition. The sound excellent with the surprisingly deep/smooth bass they are known for. Excellent midrange clarity and overall just a very non-fatiguing sound to them. You can get lost in these for hours at a time. If you are looking at these you probably already knew that. These are ready for another lifetime of enjoyment. The alnico woofers have been refoamed within the last 6 months. The crossovers were recapped with film capacitors of the same values as the original. The original rheostats have been reconditioned to like new by soaking in an acid brine with the contacts polished. This is the recommended restoration procedure painstakingly documented on the classicspeakers web page. They work as new with no scratching when adjusting the tweeter and mid levels. Restoring them is better than replacing with the almost pretty close spec modern parts. They will degrade again (probably over a few decades) as every classic AR speaker owner knows. A shot of deoxit every few years should hold this at bay. Cosmetically these are great! The walnut veneer is in great shape with some minor scratches and one small chip (see photos). It polished out nicely and has a great grain pattern. Corners are excellent with one showing a small compression dent. There is some minor paint and tape residue on the backs. The original grill cloth has some fading and a few small runs near the edges on both speakers. I was kinda torn whether or not it should be replaced or left for originality. I’ll let the new owner decide since this is pretty easy for almost any do-it-yourself-er. Overall I’d say these are easily 7.5/10 for cosmetics and 10/10 for sound! Other things to note. Missing knobs from tweeter and mid adjusters. Paper labels on back are somewhat torn and have been taped. I will include the old dried out wax capacitors if someone really wants 100% originality. Up to you to re-install. They did not sound nice though ;. Serial numbers 204279 and 204545. See the pictures, I tried to document the minor defects so you know just what you are getting.
