For sale is a completely refurbished pair of Acoustic Research AR-4x. The AR-4x was introduced in 1965 and discontinued in 1973. This is a 2-Way, 8ohm 18.5lbs speaker measuring 19″ x 9″ x 10″ and has an 8″ Woofer and 2.5 cone tweeter. It was considered a bookshelf type speaker and extremely popular due to its warm sound, adjustable tweeter, and reasonably affordable price for the time. As for the refurbishment, the cabinets were completely sanded and professionally refinished with (3) coats of Formby’s Danish Oil and several coats of Howard’s Feed and Wax wood conditioner. Simply put, they look like pieces of furniture. Not a mark on them. Please note I believe these are Pine or Birch and not Walnut. The crossovers were updated to include new Dayton Audio Grade Capacitors. The “caps” typically go bad after a while and change value altering the sound of the speaker. I have also completely cleaned the tweeter potentiometer (level controls) with DeoxIT and a silicon lubricant. These are typically the problem when there is a lack of high-frequency, or static from the speaker. They should be good for a while but no guarantees as they may need a more thorough, more extensive cleaning. The 8″ woofer surrounds were also professionally re-foamed and the entire system resealed or “redoped as its important that these cabinets are completely sealed to ensure the best sound. The rock wool was also replaced inside the cabinet with the proper amount of fiberglass insulation as the original rock wool was known to attract moisture and negatively impact the speaker electronics, and the “pots” in particular. Lastly, the cloth was replaced on the grills with as close to the original 28ct tea dyed Irish Linen. They came out awesome. Frankly, I hesitate to even list these, however, I have a few other speakers including AR-4X and KLH. You cannot go wrong with these. This are the best looking 45+ year old bookshelf speakers you will hear. I don’t doubt they will last another 45 with proper care. We have done our best to accurately describe and list these.
