Here for sale is one Vintage Set of Acoustic Research AR-4xa Suspension Speakers that are Walnut Grained. Although these speakers are now over 40 years old, they work very well and also show well. As the photos indicate, the exterior wood on these speakers is very good, but there are some small dings and scratches. The fabric on the face of both speakers is also very good but there are some slight color variations here. Both of the small gold nameplates on these speakers are intact and also show well. In addition, both speakers come with the original factory packing boxes. The dimensions of each of these speakers are 19 and 1/4 inches high by 10 and 1/8 inches wide by 9 and 1/4 inches deep. I bought these speakers from another student while I was living in a college dorm in about 1977. Back then, these were typically called “bookshelf” speakers. At that time I had a 5-watt Sound Design amplifier. These speakers worked well with that amplifier, but did not seem to have the treble response that other students’ speakers had. However, I never tested the speakers until early September of 2017. I hooked these speakers up to the 60-watt back channels of my Adcom system and was very pleasantly surprised at the clarity of sound and especially the treble response. I placed my ear over the speakers and then increased the treble response with the switches on the back of each one and was able to tell a difference with the hearing that I have today, when I could never tell a difference 40 years ago when I was living in the college dorm. Hence, this set of AR-4xa speakers today appear to be fully functional and, although they don’t sound like my set of four Kef speakers, I find that they sound very nice as a pair of bookshelf speakers. It is time for me to let somebody else enjoy these speakers. What you see here is what you will get. All items come from a smoke-free environment. But, these speakers will be insured.
