1969 Acoustic Research AR-3a – Fully RestoredThis is a beautiful example of the legendary AR-3a. Just off a fresh restore. The cabinets are the nicest I’ve seen. Even the bottoms are nice. Still have the original finish. Recently oiled and waxed. Original grill cloth is in good shape. No visible tears or pulls. Excellent aged color to the fabric. Potentiometer controls were removed, opened up and thoroughly cleaned. They were nearly perfect before cleaning. After cleaning, there is absolutely no noise or dead spots in the controls. First time I’ve seen that. Dielectric grease was added to keep them fresh for years to come. All capacitors were replaced. Dynamat added to woofer basket to reduce ringing. New seal added between cabinet and woofer. If you know these speakers or do some research, you’ll find that this is the best possible replacement for the aging originals. When bought from Vintage AR, they install the right air-core inductor to the back of the tweeter to ensure it matches the original specs. I have restored multiple sets of AR-3a and this set with the replacement tweeters sounds better than any I’ve heard. They’re crystal clear without any harshness whatsoever. I’m very impressed. And onto sound: These sound just as they should, but even a little better due to the new tweeters. Full, tight bass, clear and smooth highs, and mids to die for. If you know these speakers, you know the sound. They’re legends for a reason. This is a fantastic example of AR-3a. And a true value. I’m knocking off a couple hundred bucks because they have replacement tweeters. If you value aesthetics and sound quality over ultimate collectability, this is the pair for you.
