AR-2a Speaker System, Classics, Refurbished, Lot 2. The AR-2a added the AR-3 tweeter to the existing AR-2 system. Each enclosure features a 10-inch woofer with woven cloth surround, two 5″ inch mid-range cones and a 1 3/8″ dome super tweeter. These vintage speakers do not use foam surrounds on the woofers, as later models do. The surrounds are instead made of a more durable cloth material. The woofers also use the better ALNICO magnets. Cabinets are nice walnut veneer. These classic speakers in original condition will nearly always need work on the tweeter and mid pots that corrode over time causing the mids and tweeter to be inoperable. All four pots in this system were opened and cleaned then treated with Deoxit 5. See image of example of how they were serviced. Cabinets were also detailed and refreshed with Minwax Wood Finish products. I’d rate the cabinets in 8 out of 10. Not perfect, but very presentable. Please use images as a guide. 100% Original, no hacks on this pair. All original drivers working. Tweeter and Midrange pots disassembled cleaned and treated with Deoxit 5. Original Woofers use expensive ALNICO magnets, not the cheaper ceramic type. Original Grills are intact and may have had some repair work. I didn’t restaple them in case the need for future removal. Original AR solid brass and “a” emblems are intact on both pair of speaker. Bottom line, if you want a refurbished original pair of this classic AR speaker where you can plug and play with immediate enjoyment this may be your pair. Most others you find will require work. I have 25 years experience working with vintage AR speakers. Safe packing will be achieved by wrapping the speakers in three layers of dense foam and using double corrugated boxs.
