The Acoustic Research 2x and 2ax (AR-2x / AR-2ax) are based on the design of the AR-3a, but were marketed as a value product, which means price played a crucial role. Therefore it contains most of the typical elements and ingredients as the high-priced Acoustic Research speakers, but has a slightly lower performance. The performance standard in the design of the AR-2ax was the same as that for the AR-3a; natural reproduction of music without exaggeration or artificiality of sound. But where quality in the case of the AR-3a has been limited only by the state of the art. The caps and pots have been replaced with new parts. The tweeters have been upgraded to the new Vintage-AR dome tweeters. New original tweeters for these speakers have not been available for many years. Additionally, even when we can locate an original, used AR tweeter, in most cases the performance is very subdued. Both the internal and external suspensions have deteriorated substantially over the years. I installed a pair of these replacements in a pair of AR-2ax speakers and marveled at the high notes that were restored. These are very close to the same soundstage. This pair of 2 ax sound wonderful through my McINTOSH/FM receiver and PL 550 TT. The cabinets have been sanded and stained. Some deep scratches, good for a set that is 60 years old.
